Facing Fear!

Mark 8:31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
32 He spoke this word openly. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.
33 But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”
34 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
35 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.
36 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?
37Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
38 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

Many things come to mind when I read these few lines of scripture, but the one thing that stands out to me is the motive behind what Peter said to Yahshua when He began to rebuke Him. Peter is simply afraid of death, just as we all are. Yet most of us know full well that as sure as we were born into this world, we must die. But when He comes to rebuke Yahshua for saying that He knew that He must die at the hands of the elders and the chief priests.

And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. (Vs 31)

Apparently, He wasn’t listening when Yahshua said he will rise from the dead three days after His death.

So then Peter is the one who is rebuked by Yahshua in front of them all.

But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.” (Vs 33)

Peter was thinking like someone who was not saved, and in His heart, he didn’t believe in the resurrection, He was thinking like the average man. He had not completely understood the concept of being reborn, death followed by life. And while this opportunity arose, here is an excellent opportunity for Yahshua to teach.

When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” (Vs 34)

When we come to Christ, we must also follow Him, and that is what he is about to make absolutely clear.

For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?
Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? (Vs 35-37)

We need to come to terms with our own death, because when we submit our selves to Yahshua and His teachings we will discover that we are already dead and reborn in the flesh. Our actual death has already taken place and our resurrection sure.

But if we cling to life in this world, we will walk in fear of death. We are of this world and not of God? while we know that death is unavoidable, we don’t have to be afraid of it. To have a mind that is fearful of death is to allow Satan a foothold in our life.

death is our ultimate fear, every other fear is tied to this one thing and is why Paul said what he did about it.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2nd Timothy 1:7)

We have to learn to surrender our lives to Yahshua, we are His now, and He Lives Just as we also live. It is now a matter of trust, do we trust Him? Do we understand that He is with us 24/7?

Then do not let fear or Satan rob us of our Life in Christ by living in fear.

“For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.” (Vs 38)

When we see Him, He will want us to come to Him in victory over death. Believing in Him and His Words ought to remove from us any doubt.

As for me, I have had Him speak to me first hand about my future, in a vision He showed me my cross that I would bear. I pray that all of us have such a vision, and reassurance. But mine did not come until I realized the wrong I had done, and on my knees I repented and gave my life to Him.

I pray that whoever reads this and is bound up in fear, that they will manage to get free of their fear.

“If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.
And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31, 32)
